The cultural capital of the North, Hamburg patronises the arts generously with both money and attention, keeping ticket prices down. As for any major city in the modern world, Hamburg has a thriving nightlife that just begs to be explored by the discerning visitor. Everything from classical ballet and traditional jazz to the more rambunctious R'n'B and live rock acts. The Staatsoper (Grosse Theaterstr. 35. Tel: 040/356-868) houses one of the best opera companies in Germany, and the associated ballet company is the acknowledged dance powerhouse of the nation. Orchestras abound, the most popular being the Philarmonie, the Nord-Deutscher- Rundfunk and the Hamburg Symphony. Lighter music, popular musicals and transvestite cabarets play at the Operettenhaus Hamburg in St Pauli (Tel: +49 18054444), the Neue Flora Theatre in Altona, and other smaller venues.
